Generally, grow lights are of three types:

Fluorescent lights

These lights are much more efficient and longer lasting than regular bulbs. What’s more, they are super thin and come in a wide range of intensities. However, these lights need to be placed closer to the plants.

Fluorescent tubes need long fixtures to be installed. On the other hand, CFLs (Compact fluorescent bulbs) are a great choice for smaller spaces. Generally, CFLs will screw into a regular bulb fixture.

HID lights are of two types:

  1. Firstly, HPS (High Pressure Sodium) bulbs are used during the flowering phase. They emit an orange-red spectrum which is great for growing flowers. But you should not use them during the fruit cycle. Because it may lead to poor quality plants.
  2. Secondly, MH (Metal Halide) bulbs are used for foliage and vegetable growth. These bulbs emit a high spectrum blue light that’s good for growing fruits. Unlike HPS bulbs, these are not so useful in the flowering phase.

4. Irrigation System

Irrigation systems are the next big Horticulture products to make it on the list. Investing in one can save you a lot of money and time. Although the initial costs are high, it will pay off in the long run.

Unlike sprinklers, drip irrigation is a low-pressure irrigation system. Instead of releasing large amounts of water, it slowly gives water direct to the roots. That’s why its super effective on plant growth.

This way, a drip system keeps roots moist, but not completely soaked. Hence, it’s a very efficient and water saving method. As a result, it saves you both money and time.

  • Slow and precise watering avoids runoff and erosion

Surface Irrigation

Surface irrigation uses gravity to water your plants. And this is the cheapest way to water them. Naturally, water spread all over the area based on the slopes given.

5. Ventilation

In a greenhouse, ventilation can be either natural or mechanical. Either way, the core principle is thermal buoyancy. Which means that cold air is used to push warm air out of the greenhouse.

Mechanical ventilation uses fans, exhaust and air intakes. The exhaust fans remove hot air. On the other hand, the air intakes and vents bring in cool air. In general, length wise airflow is common in mechanical ventilation.

For better control, there should be many fans with varying speeds. Just like fans, the air intakes are equally important. With a proper design, you can maintain the ideal growing conditions inside.

In contrast, natural ventilation uses roof and sidewall vents. The roof vents allow the rising hot air to escape. Whereas, the sidewall vents bring in the cold air.

In addition, roll-up curtains are added to let the cold air in. Usually, natural ventilation allows air flow across the width of the greenhouse. So, fresh air will be cooler compared to air moving along the length.
